Thanks for putting into words what I know about dogs and why I love them so. There are busy being exactly what God created them to be. They are purely dogs. And if I could just be purely human in a way a dog is purely a dog...well, that would be pretty fine.

There is an element of pet ownership generally, and dog ownership in particular, that I think is also in play here - part of the romanticism of dogs is their short life spans. Perhaps a bit on the nose, but with dogs in particular, there is a vibe rather like Murder, She Wrote starring a widow of the perfect husband. Part of loving dogs is being forced to grieve their passing, within a human society that, like all human societies, features deep and powerful forces that offer seductive promises of immortality.
