My favourite Christmas movie too, though I didn't get around to watching it this year. It gets funnier with every re-watch, and it's precisely because everything and everyone comes off as sincere, including sincerely deluded. The fact that many of the actors never acted again (or at least in anything that most people have seen) also lends the same quality to the movie itself outside of its own universe.
